So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”

--Zechariah 4:6 (NIV)

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

--2 Corinthians 3:16-18 (NIV)

“…The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

--Acts 11:26b (NIV)

I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?

--Galatians 3:2-3 (NIV)

Three Ways We Can Live a Life Shaped by the Spirit of God:

1.    Let the Holy Spirit .

“And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

--John 16:8 NLT

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

--Isaiah 30:21 (NIV)

“Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.”

--Acts 5:11 (NIV)

The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life,
turning a person from the snares of death.

--Proverbs 14:27 (NIV)

  • Prayer: Holy Spirit  me.

2.    Let the Holy Spirit .

On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

--Acts 2:1-4

Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

--1 Thessalonians 5:19,23 (NIV)

“You know, we live in a day when we are more afraid of holiness than we are of sinfulness.”

--Leonard Ravenhill

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”

--C.S. Lewis

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.”

--Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

--Galatians 5:24-26

  • Prayer: Holy Spirit me.

3.    Let the Holy Spirit .

But the Lord said, “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.”

--Acts 9:15-16 (NIV)

  • Prayer: Holy Spirit  me.

Here is the promise, where we started today’s message:

“And the Lord – who is the Spirit – makes us more and more like him as we are changed into His glorious image.”

What is one fruit of the Spirit that God is calling you to cultivate?
