Day 11- Breaking Bread

We don’t just remember Jesus during Holy Communion at church; we remember him in how we live our lives daily.

Breaking Bread…

Communion is a wonderful moment for believers to gather with the single purpose of centering our minds and hearts on the death and resurrection of Christ.

One of the most remarkable moments in scripture is the scene of the Last Supper.

The gospel of Luke shares, “And Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus goes on to say, “In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant established by My blood; it is shed for you.”

The symbolism in this short text of scripture is powerful. The cup and bread represent suffering and death.

Jesus broke the bread and explained that his breaking symbolized what would happen to him, to his body. It would be broken, bruised, and crushed. He would bear the stripes of brutal whippings. Jesus died a criminal’s death so that we would live. He gave His life for our us.

Jesus held up the cup of wine. Jesus slowly, deliberately, and lovingly explained that the wine represented his blood. Before long, he would spill his blood to cover over the sins of the guilty.

There is a key phrase that I would to spotlight in Luke 22:19 “And Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

Some bible scholars agree that Jesus’ instruction of “do this” included more than a simple and short act, or ritual we do every month. “Do

this” also refers to how we are to live. We don’t just remember Jesus during Holy Communion at church; we remember him in how we live our lives daily. Because Jesus’ body was broken, because his blood was poured out for us, we too should live daily for him, broken and poured out.

Matthew 16:25 encapsulates this thought perfectly…For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

The message translation says it this way…

24-26 Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?

What if we had the courage, the audacity, the faith to pray, “God break me”? What if we too lived broken and poured-out lives for Christ…what would that look like in your life?
